When Does A Retirement Become A Fantasy Instead Of A Reality Waiting For The Right Time?

Posted @ 10:57 pm - Filed under Purposeful Planning, Check This Out, Retirement, 401(k)'s & IRA's, Goals

This question haunts me sometimes. It’s understandable ‘cuz the stories folks tell me can bring on a strong and unwanted sense of helplessness. When people find themselves in their 50’s and realize their retirement isn’t gonna come close to what they planned 20-something years ago, panic can set in. The Wall Street Journal published a story 3-4 years ago. Among other things, it said the average American man, at 57, had less than $60,000 in his 401(k), a home with a mortgage, and hope that Social Security wouldn’t be in the history books as an idea that failed.

Sailing into the sunset

Given decent health and a ‘can do’ attitude, you can significantly improve that picture. Does the above describe you? Don’t despair. But do act quickly, ‘cuz as you might have already surmised, time ain’t yer friend at this point. You need to muster up some good old fashioned gumption, and get into gear — overdrive would be preferred. Your original fantasy might not be in the cards now, but you can sure make a new one come true.

You can improve what now may seem a harsh retirement. You may think there’s nothing you can do. For some, that’s unfortunately and sadly correct. But for many, there’s plenty you can do. You just have to do it, and do it yesterday around 4:30 or so. :)

So first thing, either call me or email me, but let’s get a remake of your retirement on the Purposeful Planning board. Make sense? You know it does. Your only real enemy, I mean besides time, is your inaction. Here’s my office number — 619 298-8100 — even if we’re out it forwards, and somebody will answer. On the itty bitty chance we don’t, you’ll get a call back way sooner than you expect. Really.

Your retirement can be salvaged — and the time to begin is now.

When does a retirement become just a fantasy? When you give up. Never say die. If yer game, we’re game. We’ll do whatever can be done. But the first move’s gotta be yours.

Hello.

Meanwhile, back at BawldGuy Ranch, let’s go out with some very cool and upbeat, ‘We’re gonna kick booty on our way to a cool retirement’ tunes. As soon as you begin our conversation, you’ll feel much mo betta — promise. Heck, even the tunes put a smile on yer face, right? Thought so. So crank the speakers up and start feeling it.

  • So much time, so little cash - too true for most people. Absolutely spot on post. Any opinion on Palm Springs/Desert for cash flow investing these days? Or does such a thiing exist in your market?

  • In one of those weird coincidences I blogged about retirement risk this morning as well. Darker and less optimistic at least I picked a rock video relevant to the target demographic. ;-)

Palm Springs. IMO anything not coastal adjacent in Southern and Central California is too risky to consider. Census data show Palm Springs fully 1/3rd of the dwelling units unoccupied. Someday buying opportunities but even then investment opportunities will be special cases.

  • Bill — I’ve never looked at the desert and come away anything but disappointed. If something’s changed, I’ve not seen it. Have you?

  • Geez Robert — Joe Cocker was at Woodstock for Heaven’s sake! If you were 18-20 then you’re 57-60 now. The video is right down the middle. :)

  • Preach it brother! When I turned 40, I took a look and despite being a real good saver, didn’t like what I saw. A little research later and a whole new set of assumptions, and I am making it happen. Now I help others to figure out how to get to their dreams and then how to implement the wealth plan. Couldn’t be happier. Let you know when I am settled into New Hampshire for the summer!

  • Dave — Those for whom this epiphany hasn’t or won’t happen are careening towards a retirement for which they never planned. I feel for their kids who may wake up one day to find out their parents need their financial assistance for the next 20 years or more.

New Hampshire for the summer just sounds cool. :)
