A Fun Test With A Surprising Result

The Washington Post recently had world renowned violinist Joshua Bell help them with an experiment. The Post wondered if, during the hustling around in the rush of morning business, folks would notice live world class music, composed by one of the masters, being played on a $3.5Mil dollar violin, by Joshua. He’s just recently done a concert in Boston’s Symphony Hall, packing the place.

They placed him near the escalators of a very well know office building, dressed as a simple street performer, with a container placed in front of him in case folks wished to donate ‘to the cause’. What would you predict? The music director for the National Symphony Orchestra was asked to make his own prediction.

What does this have to do with real estate investing or planning for your retirement?

If you’re reading this you now know someone who knows the answers you’ve been looking for. You know someone who knows where the bodies are buried, like Grandpa used to say. You know someone who has opportunities available not yet made public.

Yeah, you know that guy.

Take a look at the opportunity right in front of more than 1,000 people. Read what happened.

Don’t continue to be them. Take action.

Here’s the link to the video with the story to go with it.

  • Jeff, This was amazing…beyond belief.
I was raised as a music lover by my musician father…music is the “voice of God”
This article touched me. I will print it out and read it over and over. How I wish I had been there in that audience.
It occured to me that we need time to pay attention to life and always leave 15 minutes early just in case a miracle happens that delays us. When we are in NYC, we always stop to listen too the street musicians. I think this would have gone over better in NYC than in Washington. There is a serious problem in Washington right now as many of us know.
We are finding that owning R.E. with the proper Property Managers gives us time to pay attention to life and to take advantage of the finer things…like culture.
Did you happen to go to “Art Alive” at the Art Musuem…if you missed it this year, go next year.
Thanks so much for sharing this article!!

  • I don’t know Washington, but I agree with Cher’s comment above - I think in NYC things would have been different.

There is a great response to the Joshua Bell article by a NYC subway musician in her blog: www.SawLady.com/blog
She interprets the situation differently from the Washington Post reporters… I thought you might find it interesting.

  • 1. I am VERY easily amuzed, so I tend to stop for street performers and PRETEND that they are world class violinists… life should be fun.

    2. It is true that we often miss what you’ve previously referred to as “The Big Picture”- perhaps a true “street performer” IS the next world-class violinist, just not yet discovered because he’s using a $25 used violin.

    3. So, not only do we often miss what is in front of us out of ignorance, we miss it ON PURPOSE! How many people walked by not knowing Josh from a homeless person?

Also, doesn’t this show that most any life situation is an allegory for Real Estate? :)

  • Cher - I’ll bet on a warm summer NY day it might take you an hour to cover a few blocks. :)

It does, but it’s far easier for me to draw the baseball analogy.

  • Jeff, thanks for the link to this one. I read it this morning, and it has been stuck in my thoughts all day… was to a funeral of a very wonderful woman yesterday afternoon, and today you show me this. It’s a lot to digest in a short time (even without thinking about the real estate analogy)…

  • Bill - I’m sorry for your loss.

I think being in the present, instead of always being in the next five minutes, or hour, or wherever we’re headed is a lesson I took from that video.

It reminded me of my Grandpa, a multi-talented man who also played the violin. Often when we visited, my sister and I would be too slow getting ready for church, irritating Mom. Grandpa would break out the violin and begin playing the William Tell Overture, while rattling the walls with hie trademark laugh.
